Benzyl alcohol solutions at concentrations of 10% v/v also have anesthetic properties and can be used in intravenous preparations, cough medicines, ophthalmic preparations, ointments and skin sprays.
Although it is widely used as a preservative, it causes deadly side effects when prescribed for children. Admittedly, IV preparations containing a preservative, whether it is benzyl alcohol or any other thing, mustn’t be prescribed for newborns for any reason.
Antibacterial preservative, antiseptic solution. Benzyl alcohol is used in cosmetics and foods, as well as in a large number of oral and injection drugs at concentrations up to 2% v/v in cosmetics, and at concentrations up to 3% v/v as a preservative. At higher concentrations, it can be used as a sweetener of 5% or more. It can also be used as a sterilizer at concentrations of 10% v/v.
