We can directly get cobalt from its raw materials, but it is usually obtained as an additive by-product for mining copper or nickel. There are large sedimentary deposits of cobalt raw materials in Africa, especially in Democratic Republic of the Congo that contributes about 50% of the world’s production of this mineral. Blue cobalt tanning is known since the ancient times. It is used in dyes manufacturing field and glass painting. These days, cobalt is widely used in the manufacture of lithium-ion batteries and in the manufacture of alloys.
Cobalt is a chemical element with the formula “Co”, and its atomic number is 27. It belongs to d sublevel elements, and it locates in the upper part of the ninth group elements in the periodic table.
It is chemically categorized as a transition metal. In nature, cobalt especially exists in the earth’s crust and involves with other chemical elements in different metals. It doesn’t exist in its natural free form. When getting cobalt in its pure form, cobalt appears as a shiny silver-gray metal. Cobalt has one stable isotope which is cobalt 59. It is also has one important radiant isotope which is cobalt 60 used as a radiant element and to produce high energy gamma rays.
